Japanese fashion: The Haori Jacket

Japan; the popular destination for high fashion to streetwear. When you think of Japanese fashion, most would automatically think of the streets of Harijuku – over the top, bright coloured, avant-garde outfits, but this country offers far more to the world of trend setting than the well-known kawaii Harijuku girl style.

The Japanese Haori jacket has transitioned into western culture as a wardrobe staple all over the world. The Haori is a light weight coat/jacket traditionally worn over a Kimono during ceremonies and festivals by men. It wasn’t until the Edo period (1615-1868) that Geisha started to wear Haori’s, from there on women began to wear them, mainly to prevent their Kimono’s from getting dirty or marked.

Fast forward to today the Haori jacket is worn by men and women as an open front, light weight jacket that can compliment casual or formal attire.

Men’s Haori jackets are usually more subtle and natural compared to the bold designs and colours. Pairing the Haori jacket with a pair of jeans and natural top is a great way to go from casual to chic. If you’re wanting to go more formal, coupling the jacket with a simple, plain dress for women or dress pants for men. Although Haori jackets are usually worn open, you can also accessorise the jacket with a waist belt for a more cinched look.
